Film-maker brief for Community Researchers Project

The Community Researchers Project, starting next month, is looking for a film-maker to work with them over 6 months. Details below:


The Social Rights Alliance Community Researcher project is bringing together a group of 6 grassroot activists from across England to work together on a supported action research project exploring how using a Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and a Human Rights Based Approach impacts social justice work/campaigns.

The group have decided to make a film to document their learning so they can share it with others in their groups and communities, in person, and online spaces.


The Community Researchers are meeting fortnightly on Zoom for six months, Sept 21 – Feb 22, and will be running activities in their communities over this time. Researchers are based in Hartlepool, Newcastle, Hull, Brent, and Sheppey.


Film maker task:

  • To work with the Community Researchers group to co-produce a film about their experience of the project’s process;

  • To support the Community Researchers to use available technology to capture footage in their community;

  • To provide appropriate consent forms for Community Researchers and ensure appropriate permissions of those appearing on camera;

  • To make use of Zoom footage from the group sessions;

  • To ensure final product it edited and completed to good standard, including accessibility aides.


What we are looking for:

  • Experienced film maker, preferably with knowledge of human rights/community development;

  • Experience of working with diverse communities on co-production films;

  • Ability to support and group members to develop necessary skills to collect footage locally;

  • Understanding issues around accessibility and ability to find creative solutions;


Selection process:

  • Submit one page proposal including budget (and any applicable VAT) and example of similar work to SRA@justfair.org.uk by midday on 31st August 2021. +++DEADLINE EXTENDED TO MONDAY 6TH SEPT+++

  • Shortlisted candidates will be invited to meet Community Researchers on afternoon of 8th September 2021

  • Final decision will be made by 17th September 2021.
