Find your PANTHER to challenge the Northern Powerhouse

Updated: Dec 15, 2020

The Social Rights Alliance will be delivering a interactive workshop at The People’s Powerhouse Convention on Wednesday 25th November. Exploring the PANTHER rights-based approach, participants will identify their own Panther to strengthen their campaigns and work to challenge the Northern Powerhouse agenda.

Covid-19 and the responses to the pandemic are not only highlighting and reinforcing existing inequalities, poverty and exclusion faced by many in the North, but now further entrenching them.

This workshop will explore the seven key principles of a rights-based approach, commonly remembered as the acronym PANTHER. The principles of Participation, Accountability, Non-discrimination, Transparency, Human dignity, Empowerment and Rule of law create opportunities to promote structures, policies and cultures that take into account the needs of different people while maintaining a baseline of provision for all people. A human rights-based approach looks not only at an individual and whether they are able to access their rights, but also at what governments are doing to ensure people’s rights are respected and fulfilled.

Through an interactive process we will explore what PANTHER can mean in your work, your campaign or your community action. We will share examples from around the world of how a Human Rights Approach has added value to campaigns. We will explore how a rights-based approach in your work and using it to challenge the Northern Powerhouse agenda. By the end of the workshop you will feel confident to take YOUR PANTHER back to your project and start developing a rights-based approach of your own.

The Social Rights Alliance, supported by Just Fair, is working in the North East of England, Yorkshire & Humber and Manchester to tackle local issues and the disproportionate impact of Covid-19 on many communities using a rights-based approach.

The two day convention is free to all, though spaces need to be booked in advance here and the Social Rights Alliance workshop tickets can be booked here.
